Zarafa Tented Camp - Rates from USD 1,025

Zarafa means "the beloved one" or "the lovely one" in Arabic. The name comes from a giraffe, which was presented to Charles X of France in 1826 by the Viceroy of Egypt. The giraffe was a sensation to all who saw her, and provided inspiration. The new Zarafa Camp lives up to the name, inspiring even the well traveled, and renewing the spirit of all who visit.

The Lodge

Zarafa Camp is designed with exclusivity and privacy at its core. Each tent is positioned on the forest's edge, rimming the shores of the floodplains and far from a neighbour. The 1,000 square foot 'marquis style' canvas tents are expansive and open-air without exposing guests to the elements. Each of the three "rooms" of the tent is decorated with custom-made furniture, handcrafted from recycled ancient hardwoods. The raised decks, constructed of recycled African railroad sleepers, form the tent's foundation.

Upon entry is a large lounge appointed with a leather sofa, armchairs, personal bar and writing desk. Adjoining the lounge is the main bedroom and dressing area, where the overhead fans and seductive mosquito nets set the ambiance. Exiting the bedroom, a beautiful copper gas fireplace is strategically placed between the bathroom and the bedroom to allay the chill of the winter months. The main bathroom is comprised of a copper bath and shower, double sinks and private toilet. Off the bathroom, the raised walkway leads to the outdoor shower, complete with wrap around showerheads! The private verandah, running the length of the front of the tent, offers a private plunge pool, outdoor lounge and sweeping view of Zibadianja Lagoon's waters.

Meals are generally table d’hôte and include a light breakfast at dawn, a hearty brunch on return from the morning activity, afternoon tea and snacks before the afternoon activity, rounded off with a sumptuous dinner in the evening. Special meals and requirements can be catered for on request. All local soft drinks, wines, spirits and beers are included in the tariff.

Activities
Our Toyota Land Cruisers have been specially designed by the Jouberts. The thoughtful engineering provides all-round visibility with removable canvas roofs, and comfortable bucket seats. These rugged, 4X4 vehicles provide access to all of the Selinda Reserve's diverse ecosystems, and do so with ease.

Short walks from camp with our fully qualified guides are offered as well. Arrangements can be made with management on site, but should this activity need to be guaranteed, then we recommend arranging it in advance.

How to get to us. BY AIR
Selinda Camp is only accessible to guests by seat-in plane air transfers or private charters. On arrival at the airfield, the road transfer to camp is approximately 45 minutes allowing time for game viewing en route. During flood season, when water levels rise, we often use a boat for transfers. This transfer is a combination of a 15-minute drive to the boat dock and then a 15-minute boat ride to camp. We prefer to use the boat for transfers whenever logistically feasible.

Selinda Camp's (Category B) airfield is licensed for aircraft as large as a King Air, Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Caravan.
The coordinates are S18"33.95'; E23"30.73'.

Flying times from Maun to Selinda Airfield is a 45 - 50 minutes flight. And Kasane to Zarafa is a 50 minutes.

There are a number of air charter companies based in Maun who will gladly assist with flights to Selinda. Luggage restriction is 20kg's (44lbs), this includes camera equipment and hand luggage and must be packed in soft bags without wheels. Passengers weighing more than 100 kg(220lbs) must please advise the charter company in advance as an extra seat will then be costed into the package for safety purposes.
Recommendations We do have a high quality SLR camera in the rooms at Zarafa with a high powered lens. So bring along a good pair of binoculars and warm clothing for winter months (June to September). We do offer water activities at Zarafa like canoeing and sundowner cruises so strops and board shorts may well be handy for these activities.
High / Low Seasons Summer months (September to April / May) can be hot. By hot we mean in the mid thirties (celsius) and evenings in the twenties. July and August can get quite cool in the evenings so we certainly recommend you bring the woolies for these months, especially if you are a crack of dawn enthusiast.
Facilities Available Baby sitter available on request. Bar Service is available. Binocular available on tours. Canoe tour can be booked. Extra Bed can be organized on request. Families are welcome. Game Drive can be booked. Laundry Service is available on request. Local or Private Airstrip is available. Master Card is accepted. Mosquito Net is available. Swimming pool is available. About Us

Our Zarafa Camp Senior Staff, Dukes, Tess, Stuart and Steven.

It takes a special group of people to look after an area as cherished as the Selinda Reserve. A dedicated staff of 70 is at its core. Based in the Reserve or in our local Kasane office, they are the true stewards of the area. Each of them is proud and eager to share their culture and country with all the guests. Their enthusiasm and commitment ensure that the Selinda Reserve is an exceptional safari destination. They bring the safari alive, infusing it with the charm of local Batswana hospitality. It's the kind of hospitality found in Africa's remote villages, where strangers are viewed as bearers of knowledge and stimulation, as lost family members from a distant tribe to be welcomed, fed and cared for. It is Batswana's tradition to be hospitable, although a shy and modest people.

Pete Unwin and Sharon Stevens manage the Selinda Reserve from their tented camp between Zarafa and Selinda Camps. With a propensity for the outdoors, Botswana lured them both. As a country with unspoiled beauty, true wilderness and dense wildlife, it was a natural fit. They began their Botswana adventure in 2003, working in the Okavango Delta for four and half years before migrating "north" to the Selinda Reserve. They feel extremely privileged and lucky to be able to do what they love while calling Botswana home.

Pete originates from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He first moved to a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, where he worked for five years honing his skills and passion for the "bush". Ready for a challenge, he looked north to Botswana to further his career. Now, after more than 10 years in the industry, his knowledge and expertise in field operations are unrivaled. Each year has further intensified his personal belief in how crucial a healthy environment is to our soul.

Sharon also hails from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After finishing school in South Africa, she moved to the USA. The time she spent away from Africa accentuated her love and appreciation of its wild places, diverse cultures and found her even more eager to learn its nuances. Upon returning, she enrolled in a tourism course, and after graduation she moved to the bush. And so the love affair began, she's even more absorbed now in enhancing the natural habitats of her home.

Pete and Sharon, along with a superb team of people, have created an experience of which we are all proud. Together, Selinda Reserve is a leader in conservation tourism.
