Amukela is ideal located to explore the diverse attractions in this region and for a self drive or organized safari in Kruger park. You can either take the Orpen or Phalaborwa-gate, about 45 minutes drive from our lodge. We can advise you about the best routes and nicest things to visit in the region. A bush walk and/or game drive can be booked, both conducted with a qualified guide. Special offers are available if you stay longer then 5 nights!

Amukela Game Lodge has 4 cosy rondawels, each with their own theme. The rondawels all have a kingsize bed with mosquito net and air-conditioning. The en-suite bathroom has a toilet, shower and a basin.   In 2 of our rondawels the bed has 2 single mattresses. On request we can make extra beds for children. The rondawels can be reached by a bridge over a dry riverbed. In the warm summermonths it is nice to cool down in our swimming pool.  In the mainbuildimg you can find the reception, the lounge and the breakfast area.We have several magazines, books and maps of the area in the lounge, as well as sattelite TV (DSTV). Enjoy the tranquility of the bush while you don't have to miss the sports games! In the evening enjoy the dinner in our boma  under the breathtaking stars.  Sit around the campfire and listen to the voices of Africa!
From the shaded terrace as well as our swimming pool you have a view on the bush and our waterhole. Here you can relax, and watch the animals and birds come and go all day. In the evenings the waterhole is lit by a floodlight.
Mercury Star Deck
From the Mercury star deck you can watch the breathtaking southern sky and we gladly give an explanation about the stars, constellations etc.
Elephantback - Safari
These activities are very popular and we advise to book them in advance. On the Elephantback-safari you go on the back of an elephant looking for wild animals. After the 75 minute long walk in the Kapama big 5 game reserve, there will be opportunities to learn more about the Elephants, to take pictures and have a picknick.
Gamedrive - Nightsafari
Search for animals on a game-drive, conducted by a qualified guide. Experience nature from an open vehicle and enjoy the African bush. Your guide will give you information about animals, birds and more. Gamedrives are held in the Balule nature reserve, where the Big-5 roam, and take about 3 hours. Gamedrives start from 5:30 / 6:30 in the morning and 15:30 / 16:30 in the aftenoon. (depending on the season). At the afternoon drive there is a stop for a sundowner after which the safari continues in the dark. Nightsafari, looking for nocturnal animals such as civet, genet, bushbaby and owls. If you're lucky you will meet Becky, the elephant who was raised by humans since her birth. She is used to humans and sometimes comes close to the game-vehicle.
Greet the new day in the bush, together with an armed and qualified guide. Explore the fascinating nature in Africa by foot, in an easy going pace. On the walk you will learn about animal tracks and behaviour, trees and bushes with medicinal properties and much more. The guide will inform you about everything you encounter during the walk. The walk is about 2,5 to 3 hours and starts early in the morning. After the bushwalk breakfast will be served.
Walk with a lioncub.
At a neighbouring game-reserve it is possible to walk with a lioncub. At this moment they don't have a lioncub but walk with young cheetah's. After the 2-hour lion-walk in the bush,  you'll get an extensive breakfast.

Visit to Rehabilitation Centers
-  Cheetah Breeding Project: here they breed with cheetah's, which are an endangered species.  Besides cheetah's this project also has wild dogs and some other endangered species.

About Us

About the owners.
We are Corné and Miriam van Dongen, owners of Amukela Game Lodge. After our first expedition in 1997, where we discovered Tanzania and Zanzibar, Africa got a special place in our hearts. The years after that trip we travelled through South-Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. In 2002 we decided that our future was here in South-Africa, and we started to make serious plans. In May 2003 we bought an old and dilapidated building on 21 hectares in the Balule Nature Reserve, which is now incorporated in the famous Greater Kruger National Park. Balule is home to the Big Five and many other animals and is perfect situated for visiting the Drakensberg, the Krugerpark and many other attractions in this region. In 2004 we spent almost a year in the building of our lodge, and problems like no water and power were the first challenges that we had to overcome. Our lives changed dramatically, from office jobs in the Netherlands, to a new life in Big-5 country! We love the space and wildlife here and thanks to the fantastic climate we live outdoors the whole year. We are very happy on our own little piece of Africa.

On 3 September 2006 our son Niels was born here in South Africa. He is a real bush child and interested in all the animals, big and small. On 15 December 2008 his brother Dennis was born. Niels is a very sweet big brother and he and Dennis are best friends. It will be a great experience for them to grow up in this environment!

We love the African bush, and will be your hosts, ensuring to give you  the same bush-experiences we had.
