Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park, a Mozambican treasure, provides environmental, educational, aesthetic, recreational   benefits to travellers in general, and a creation of sustainable economic life to the local population. The rain and seasonal inundation of the valley, along with many different soil types, creates a unique mosaic of distinct ecosystems. The plains are dotted with acacia savanna, dry forests in sandy areas, wetlands or pans seasonally filled by the rains, and thickets on termite-built mounds. The plateaus contain miombo and mountain forest and a spectaculare rainforest at the bottom of a series of limestone gorges. This unique combination of characteristics and ecosystems once gave rise to one of the most dense populations of wildlife in all of Africa.

The park is open for visitors from 6:00 am in the morning to 6:00 pm in the late afternoon. Entry point to the park is through the main gate. Although Chitengo Safari Camp is open yearround, we encourage visits between April and Novemeber ( the dry season ), as during the rainy seasonthe internal roads network in the park becomes impassable.

Regulare flights land in both the Beira and Chimoio airports, and you can contact the Park office to organise land transfer from the airports to Gorongosa National Park. travellers on a self drive safaricoming from Maputu, recommends to take EN1 north to Inchope and then follow the posted signs Gorongosa National Park ( GNP ). Alternativerly, if coming from Beira or Chimoio we recommend you to take EN6 to its intersection with the EN1 in Inchope and then follow the posted sign to GNP.
